Where the sidewalk ends in Ocean Isle Beach
The Ocean Isle Beach Board of Commissioners plans to discuss awarding contracts for the East End Sidewalk Extension Project this January. The project will extend the sidewalk system from Sanford Street to the end of the existing pavement, creating more walkable routes for residents and visitors. With $690,000 budgeted and approval from the North Carolina Department of Transportation already in place, construction is expected to take about 68 days once the contract is awarded, wrapping up by March or April.
Repairs Planned for the Carolina Beach Pier
Repairs are in the works for the Carolina Beach pier. The end portion of the 700-foot wooden structure been closed for months due to storm damage from earlier this year. This is not the first time the pier has been damaged by severe weather. In 2018 sections had to be repaired after Hurricane Florence damaged the structure. And in 1954 the entire pier was rebuilt after being hit by Hurricane Hazel. Attached to a restaurant and tiki bar, the pier has been a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike for decades. Current owners, who bought the property in 2022, haven’t yet applied for permits, so there’s no timeline for the project just yet. Stay tuned for updates as this iconic piece of Carolina Beach gets ready for its next chapter!
Wilmington Apartment Complex wants to add Workforce Housing
Chartwell Property Group is seeking to rezone Still Meadow Village in Wilmington to add 56 rental units to the existing 280-unit apartment complex. The plan includes a four-story building with 32 units, a three-story building with 24 units, and a 3,000-square-foot amenity center. If approved, the property would be rezoned from medium density-10 to medium density-17 conditional district. The developer aims to begin construction by late 2025 and finish in 2026. Chartwell says the expansion will support workforce housing by spreading operational costs across more units. The proposal is currently under review, with no planning commission date set.
Circle K Expanding Presences in Wilmington
Nearly 1.5 acres of vacant land along Market Street in Wilmington may soon be transformed into a new Circle K location. The proposed development would be located at 4500 Market St. The proposal comes just a few months after Wilmington City Council approved a rezoning request for another Circle K location on Dawson Street. The property would include a one-story 5,200 square-foot building, a fuel canopy, 17 vehicle parking spaces and six bicycle spaces. Site plans also include two outdoor seating tables, a dog waste station, a trash enclosure and more.
Direct Flights to Denver
Denver has become the newest direct, non stop destination out of ILM. United Airlines will offer new nonstop flights from Wilmington to Denver on Saturdays during the summer season. The airline is also expanding its service to Chicago O’Harewith daily flights next summer, up from weekend-only service last year. With the addition of Denver, United will now connect Wilmington to three major mainland hubs: Chicago, Denver, and New York/Newark. Airport director Jeff Bourk called Denver a top unserved market for the region, highlighting the significance of the new route. United says the expanded service provides Wilmington travelers with greater flexibility and access to popular destinations nationwide.
