The idea of living on a golf course is a dream to many potential home buyers. Nice, well-manicured scenery, having instant access to your favorite hobby – What’s not to love? The Wilmington area certainly has no shortage of golf course communities, so let’s explore some of the pros and cons of golf course living.
The pros are pretty obvious. You can plan golf almost every day! The views are pleasant and the terrain is well maintained (by someone other than you!). Golf course neighborhoods are generally safer communities with quality homes. Have I mentioned you can play golf almost every day??
While those pros sound pretty great, there are some drawbacks to living in a golf community. Many people find the lack of privacy to be bothersome. During daylight hours, you could have a constant stream of people walking just beyond your backyard. Sometimes you will have people IN your backyard, trying to retrieve lost balls. Depending on your location on the course, you may not feel safe in your backyard without a helmet. Stray balls can break windows, dent cars and cause personal injury. That well-manicured scenery has to be maintained by someone, and you’re likely to hear the hum of lawnmowers pre-dawn.
Not all homes are directly on the fairway. There are other homes within golf communities that are further from the course. You’d be trading those lovely views for safety and privacy, however these homes would still allow you easy access to your favorite game.
When weighing the pros and cons of a golf community, consider association fees and rules and regulations associated with living there. Fees are often higher, and HOAs can dictate how your home and properties are to look and be maintained, as is the case with most HOAs.
