Living and Bicycling in Southeastern North Carolina
If cycling is your thing and you’re considering a move to Wilmington, NC or the greater Southeastern area of North Carolina, we have good news and bad news. Let’s start with the disappointing. The region’s leaders have a lackluster record of supporting bicycle friendly communities. In fact, there have been several high-profile fatal accidents in recent years. Those accidents have contributed to bicycle advocacy becoming a top topic.
The Wilmington area has an active cycling community. With the support of groups such as Cape Fear Cyclists, The Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee of the Wilmington Metropolitan Planning Organization (WMPO) has raised awareness of the need for bicycle routes, paths, lanes, and signage throughout the local area, which includes all of New Hanover County, and much of Brunswick and Pender Counties.
You’ll find more dedicated bike trails in New Hanover County than in Pender or Brunswick County. (Although the latter still offer several bike-friendly roads.) For instance, a large new Wilmington subdivision called River Lights has made improvements to River Road, making it a more bike-friendly route. In addition, both the Gary Shell Cross City Trail and the River-to-the-Sea Bikeway, have benefitted from expansions and/or upgrades.
The communities listed below are adjacent to bicycling trails and there are several areas outside of these subdivisions that are inviting for bicyclists of all skill levels.
